Defect Summary

Equipment description: tie rod assemblies manufactured by trw. the suspect tie rods contain 20 edl model ball sockets. certain of the tie rod ball-socket bearings have a below specification case depth and/or hardness which can lead to premature deterioration of the socket. these bearings were produced between july 5 and october 3, 1999.

Safety Consequence

If this condition occurs, the driver can lose partial control of the right front wheel, possibly resulting in a vehicle crash.

Corrective Action

Trw has notified the original equipment manufacturers and they will notify their customers and instruct them on how and where to get their vehicle repaired free of charge. trw has increased the total population of the ball socket assemblies. see recall 00e-047.007.
