Fracture of the s-cam bracket assemblies
Defect Summary
Caterpillar inc. (caterpillar) is recalling certain model year 2012-2013 ct660 trucks manufactured august 2011 through august 2012, and equipped with feature code 0504501, 0504504, or 04ewm reduced stopping distance (rsd) brake linings and with or without feature code 04wcs greased for life front air s-cam brakes. in the affected vehicles, the brake s-cam brackets may fracture.
Safety Consequence
S-cam bracket fractures may result in an inoperative brake on the affected wheel. This will cause the vehicle to pull to one side unexpectedly during braking and/or increase the stopping distance. either result may increase the risk of a crash.
Corrective Action
Caterpillar will notify owners, and dealers will replace the s-cam brake assemblies with a brake assembly with cast spiders and s-cam tube bracket assemblies with reinforced gussets, free of charge. the recall began on april 11, 2014. owners may contact caterpillar at 1-888-614-4328.
