Defect Summary

Takata corporation (takata) is recalling certain pspi, pspi-2, pspi-6, pspi-l, spi, psdi, psdi-4, psdi-5, and sdi non-desiccated, frontal air bag inflators containing phase stabilized ammonium nitrate (psan) propellant that were used as interim remedy parts for previous takata recalls. these inflators may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, high temperatures, and high temperature cycling.

Safety Consequence

An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.

Corrective Action

Numerous vehicle recalls will be announced by the impacted vehicle manufacturers who will conduct recalls to replace the interim replacement air bag inflators with alternate ones as a permanent remedy. the recall began january 2, 2020.
